About The Passion Some years ago Yorkshire poet Tony Harrison created a set of
three Mystery Plays based on the medieval Chester, Wakefield, Coventry and York
cycles. You may have been lucky enough to see these in production at the
National Theatre. The result was pure spectacle, with sights such as Brian
Glover as God the Master Builder, complete with hard hat, raised high above His
creation by a fork lift truck.
The Passion is the second play in the cycle, and
is based on the original York text. Whilst more serious than The Nativity,
there is still room for humour in The Passion –
Pilate and his wife are clearly influenced by Basil and Sybil Fawlty!
The Passion begins with Christ's baptism and entry into
Jerusalem. It then follows the betrayal and trial of Jesus, ending
with the crucifixion. The story is made all the more moving by how
these momentous events crossed the lives of ordinary people. The high priest's
diplomatic manipulation of Pilate and the workmen arguing about how to
errect the cross are timeless. The very familiarity of the
characters brings the story to life and draws the audience in. We know
these people...
As with The Nativity, music plays an essential part. Turvey Mysteries were pleased to present a
community production of the second of Tony Harrison's celebrated
cycle of mystery plays, The Passion,
on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th March 2007, in the
wonderful historical setting of All Saints' Church, Turvey, Bedfordshire.
